M'MUOCK FOSIMONDI DEVELOPMENT AND CULTURAL ASSOCIATION (MUDECA)

M’muock Fosimondi Development and Cultural Association (MUDECA) is the mother Association in M’muock (Fosimondi) founded in 1985 with the mission/Vision to bring the sons and daughters of M’muock at home (Cameroon) and Diaspora (abroad) together for M’muock unity and sacrifice for development of the village. This association since then, galvanizes and energies M’muock people toward coordinated, meaningful, and planned development initiatives that improve the living conditions of the M’muock people around the world and also seek to preserve their culture and traditional values.

The Patron of MUDECA is HM Fozao A. Afou, the paramount King of M’muock (Fosimondi) Kingdom. He is a man of wisdom like Solomon. Through his wisdom inherited from his father, HM Fozao A. Nzota, he had been able to unite M’muock (Fosimondi) people both at home (Cameroon) and abroad. Through M’muock Fosimondi traditional council and MUDECA, he has succeeded to maintain peace among the M’muock people as well as established peace with the neighboring villages. He visited M’muock people in USA in 2017 to synchronized unity between the diaspora and home. Something most traditional rulers hardly do.

The association through coordinated and concerted actions has developed motorable roads network, built bridges and culverts, built classrooms in various primary and secondary schools, built village main palace hall and grand stand in the kingdom.

The village currently has many heavy development projects that need funding including:

  1. M’muock -Bechati motorable road,
  2. M’muock – Besali motorable road,
  3. M’muock – Bamumbu motorable road,
  4. Educational projects,
  5. Hospital projects,
  6. Pipe born water projects,
  7. Extension of electricity to the entire village.

Through partnership with the government of the Republic of Cameroon and international development partners like United Nations Development Programmes (UNDP), MUDECA is aiming to achieve such major development projects.

MUDECA festival is celebrated annually following the academic year calendar. The festival often takes place between mid March and early April during the second term holiday. It is always schedule during this holiday period in order to favour students who are always active participants in the festival activities like sports (race and football), cultural dances, social display (fan club), fashion parade, personal talent exposure and commercial activities. This permits holiday makers to leave various towns and travel to the M’muock (Fosimondi) village for the festival. This schedule equally coincides with the resting weeks of farmers after a long stressful period of planting from January to mid March. These two factors account for the reason of always over population in the festival. The festival is generally celebrated in one week of fully involved activities known as the MUDECA festival week or “Ngaap MUDECA” in M’muock local language.

MUDECA festival is always animated by various activities involving cultural dances, sports, social display (fan club), fashion parade, personal talents exposure and fund raising.

1) Cultural Dances

Apart from the typical traditional dances from the King’s Palace by his wives and men who matter traditionally (kwang nfor and others) that aim at inviting the village gods to usher, protect and gives serenity to the final day of the ceremony which is not competitive day, other cultural display either from village quarters and branches from various towns are highly competitive, ranked and rewarded according to performances. Performances are judged using the following criteria: the costume of a group, the quality of the message in the song, the link between the song and the history of M’muock, the dancing style, the quality of the drumming, voice quality, time punctuality and the particular uniqueness portrayed by a group. At the end of cultural dances, groups are always selected, ranked and rewarded financially and materially accordingly.

2) Sports

Sporting events during the festival are always organized by the Executive Members of MUDECA, financed by the executive body and at times supported by sports lovers, coordinated by the MUDECA Sport Organizers and piloted by the President of MUDECA. Sports are taken at two levels: Race and football.

MUDECA race takes the form of going round the whole village from Molah, through Ntsang-Membei passing through Awut, climbing the hills of M’muock to Mbelenka where a U-turn is taken through Ngenba-Ntsombei, down to Nkohshing and finally Molah again. This race event is very tedious and most of the athletes taking part are M’muock athletes competing in the Mount Fako Guinness Race of Hope. M’muock athletes from MUDECA race event has won Mount Fako international race notably Mr Ngonga Pongha Charles, 3 (three) times Mount Fako Champion of 2003, 2004 and 2008 who is highly celebrated among the M’muock people for his successes and the 2016 Mount Fako champion, Mr Ndungueh Simplice who won the race after several fluctuations between 2nd and 5th. The first three winners of MUDECA race are always highly rewarded financially while other competitors are always financially compensated.

Football is the most amazing activity in during MUDECA cultural festival. Various teams are always grouped into two poles. One pole at Mbelenka and the other one (which is the main) at Mbamuock where semi-finals and finals always take place. Majority of youths turn out in MUDECA because of the football competition. Every branch is represented by at least a single football team adding about four teams based in the village. Every talented individual is always given the opportunity to express his talents in the field, this accounts why youths are always too excited to partake in MUDECA activities during the Cultural Festival. Even though sports is the most uniting factor in MUDECA, the managing team has always face difficulties in fighting against irregularities like faking Identities to involve in sports, unacceptable behaviours of some players and undeserved favours giving to some teams by the referees. However, sports stand as the most amazing and uniting factor in MUDECA.

3) Social performance and exposure of personal talents

Fan club dancers are group of magic dancers that performed as if they used current. They always accompany player from various towns to various camps in the village and cheer players up by singing and dancing, at times with decorated bodies during football matches. Fan club dancers keep the village funky during the cultural festival by drumming and dancing during the day, early hours of the nights, and early hours of every morning. Most children and some adults are always carried away by the activities of fan clubs and spend the whole cultural week behind fan clubs.

Fashion parade is always a beautiful programme exercise on the final day of MUDECA in the fon’s palace at the ceremonial ground. Beautiful girls and handsome men dressed in unique outfits and walk majestically on stage as emotions push people to rise, clap and shout uncontrollably to people they support. Envelopes are always given at the end to top ranking fashion paraders.

Personal talent exposure (arts and crafts) is always a flabbergasted moment where talents are unveiled to the audience by individuals. Formally, exposure used to take the form of cultural musics produced by the indigenes of M’muock (Fosimondi) but from 2013 it gradually turned into local carvings and designing. Presenters are always supported financially by the MUDECA and individuals.

4) Fund Raising for Village Development

The M’muock people understood that MUDECA is an association with dual nature of culture and development. While promoting their culture during MUDECA festival through traditional dances, sports and skills exposure, they often end up with the general fund raising at the King’s Palace known as Molah. This is the moment that patriotic M’muock citizens and development lovers exhibit their patriotism and love for their motherland by donating for development. No doubt M’muock (Fosimondi) is one of the most developed area in the Lebialem Division with many infrastructures that are directly attributed to MUDECA thanks to this lovely idea.
